It’s a bird? A plane? It’s … a Ram Power Wagon

If Batman drives the Batmobile and Spiderman drives the Spider-Mobile, then what does Superman drive? His cape? Enter Chrysler when they unveiled a special Ram Power Wagon last summer. Tied in to the premier of Man of Steel, the unique truck packed a blueish-grey vinyl wrap (textured like Superman’s outfit), gloss-black accents, anodized red trim, 17-inch alloys, and an interior decked out with Superman logos.

It was a nice tribute to the super-est of superheros, but Ram only made the one, and it wasn’t offered for sale. That is, at least, until now. With the movie’s debut now long behind us, the one-off Power Wagon is being auctioned off to benefit LA Family Housing, a charity dedicated to helping disadvantaged families in Southern California.

The online auction page places the donated vehicle’s value at $112,674, but bidding currently stands at $47,500 with 3 days remaining. Head on over to Charity Buzz to help out a worthwhile cause and give yourself the chance to get your hands on a one-of-a-kind vehicle and piece of cinematic history.

Ram Outsells Chevrolet

We’ve been blog-happy about our Ram trucks lately, but as it turns out, there is a great reason for it—

After sweeping several awards, including Motor Trends’ Truck of the Year for an unprecedented 2years in a row, the Ram truck is now also defeating their competition in the showroom.

For the first time since 1999—when Ram was still under the Dodge brand—Ram outsold Chevrolet during March to take second place in monthly pickup sales. A breakdown of the numbers includes 42,532 Ram pickups sold in March for a 26 percent increase; its highest March total since 2007. Chevrolet sold 42,247 Silverados last month, up only 7 percent.

GM spokesman Jim Cain tried to play down Ram’s recent success by telling Automotive News that the success in March was all driven by incentives. “The 1980s called. They want their marketing strategy back,” Cain said in response to the Silverado’s third place finish. “It’s really easy to deeply discount your truck, mine the subprime market and offer cheap lease deals to buy market share.”

What Cain failed to mention was that Chevrolet offered incentives of its own last month. The redesigned 2014 Silverado has been well received by critics since it launched last summer. But it hasn’t sold as GM would have liked.

Which points to what we think the real reason Ram had such a huge March: diesel.

March was the first full month of sales for the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel—the only half-ton pickup with a diesel engine currently on the market. That 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine gets 28 miles per gallon on the highway and 20 mpg in the city makes it the most fuel efficient pickup ever. Game on, truck world.

Why the Ram 1500 Is More Useful Than You Think

By now, everyone knows the award-winning Ram 1500 is the proverbial who’s who of trucks on the market. Named Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year for an unprecedented 2 years in a row, the Ram 1500 is featured in countless articles, reports, and online reviews (including this blog!)—all of which tout its class-exclusive features and functionalities that make it the loveable beast on the road that is. But what people may not know about this vehicle is what it can do when it’s parked. Here are some non-driving uses of this special truck.

Red Ram 1500 (1)

More food, please. Does food really taste better when you eat it outside? Around a campfire? Ram 1500 drivers can field test this theory—multiple times if necessary—by grilling a smorgasbord of food and serving it to a hungry group. Simply flip down the tailgate, pile up the food, and form a line. Watch as your group of friends, err scientists, try to prove/disprove this theory.

Turn it up. Whether you’re being outdoorsy, creating a smorgasbord (see above), or sitting by a campfire with a couple of friends, any activity instantly shoots up the fun scale when music is involved—especially when it’s delivered through crystal-clear Alpine speakers on your Ram 1500. Just don’t forget to fire up the engine now and then.

Premium seating for 2+. Nothing screams “summertime” more than fireworks. Unfortunately, it can be less than ideal to sit on the ground while watching said fireworks. So rather than fight the crowds for a slightly muddy, slightly questionable slice of dirt, why not claim premium seating on the back of your Ram 1500 in a nearby, ultra-convenient locale?

Look at that. When the summer sun sets, the Ram 1500 Dual Halo LED Projector Headlights illuminate any scene—be it tents that need built or a rousing neighborhood game of kickball that needs completed in its last inning.

Make your bed. How picturesque do warm nights, clear skies, and a million stars sounds? With the Ram 1500, you don’t have to picture them—you can actually experience them! Do yourself a favor and spend at least one night in the back of your Ram this summer. Sure you might need an air mattress or at least some comfy blankets, but the huge 8-foot bed is more than enough room to sleep comfortably under the stars.

What are some other non-driving uses you get out of your Ram 1500? Let us know, or send us a picture!

If It’s Good Enough For Jimmy Fallon…

“Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon recently announced to the world that he wants to buy a pickup truck. With assistance from Larry Webster, editor-in-chief of Road and Track, Fallon announced his top four choices, including the class-exclusive and back-to-back winner of Motor Trend’s Truck of the year, the 2014 Ram 1500. The Toyota Tacoma and two Ford F-150s, the Platinum and King Ranch editions, round out Fallon’s short shopping list.

While Fallon insists that he is truly interested in a pickup truck, the New York native and veteran of “Saturday Night Live” is clearly not a real truck guy. Case in point, he claims he intends to use the pickup to haul pumpkins and his baby — which probably won’t exceed the trucks’ cargo capacity. Ram cleverly capitalized on this statement by sending the late-night TV host a video of its 1500 pickup in a pumpkin-throwing competition.

Fallon’s professed interest in pickup trucks also raises the question: Has he ever tried to drive or park one of the 5,500-pound beasts in car-unfriendly New York? To which Ram playfully parked a coveted silver Hemi-powered 2014 Ram 1500 crew cab outside 30 Rockefeller Center in New York, where “The Tonight Show” is taped. On the back of the truck was a sign that read, “Big enough, Jimmy? Test it out.”

Whether or not Fallon follows through with the purchase of a pickup truck remains to be seen. In the meantime, we at Jim Shorkey Family Auto Group would love to offer our own personal advice to Jimmy Fallon. We may be partial, but here is “Why We Love the 2014 Ram 1500.” #GUTSGLORYFallon

Why We Love the 2014 Ram 1500

How do you enhance an already class-leading truck? That’s the question the good folks at Dodge faced when they conceptualized the 2014 Dodge Ram 1500. Luckily for truck drivers everywhere, their answer led to a world-class, attention-demanding pickup truck that dominates the competition with its distinction as the first ever back-to-back Motor Trend Truck of the Year® for 2013 and 2014. This heralded truck also boasts best-in-class 25+ HWY MPG and an available class-exclusive TORQUEFLITE® 8 eight-speed transmission. But don’t just take our word for it:

“The 2014 Ram 1500 is our top pick in the full-size pickup segment, thanks to a winning combination of strong powertrains, a smooth ride and a well-trimmed cabin.” – Edmunds

“The 2014 Ram 1500 offers something for just about any full-size truck buyer.” – Kelley Blue Book

“Already gifted with capable handling and handsome interiors, the Ram 1500 lineup is now even more unique and appealing with the addition of the EcoDiesel option…Its combination of low-end torque and efficiency will undoubtedly win over many hearts and wallets. We expect Ram will have little problem achieving its goal of a 15 percent take rate for the EcoDiesel.” – Left Lane News

Why We Love It—

Start Your Engines. The 2014 Ram 1500 features an optional EcoDiesel, turbodiesel V6, which delivers smooth, refined power. Dubbed “revolutionary” and “game-changing,” this engine produces 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. A V8 engine is also an option for anyone who plans to do lots of towing and hauling. An eight-speed automatic transmission is available with all engines that delivers quick shifting and definitively maximizes fuel economy.

Speaking of Fuel Economy. The redesigned engine offers 18 city MPG and 25+ HWY MPG. Compare that to Chevrolet’s highly-touted 4.3-liter V6 with 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque and an estimated 18 city MPG and 24 HWY MPG. Ford’s V6 doesn’t even do that well: Ford’s 3.5-liter V6 gets 16 city MPG and 22 HWY MPG.

Options. The 2014 Ram 1500 is a full-size pickup available in multiple body styles. The regular cab seats three and is available with either a 6-foot, 4-inch or 8-foot cargo bed. The extended cab (“Quad Cab”) can seat up to six and comes with the 6-foot, 4-inch bed. The Crew Cab increases rear-seat legroom, and is available with either a 5-foot, 7-inch or 6-foot, 4-inch bed. There are six main trim levels: Tradesman, HFE, SLT, Sport, Laramie and Longhorn.

Interior. With plenty of high-end materials, solid construction, and overall quietness, the 2014 Ram 1500 has one of the best cabins in the class. Its front seats are long-haul comfortable, and both Quad and Crew Cabs offer ample rear-seat space. A six-speaker stereo and a USB port are standard. Major options include Ram’s voice-activated Uconnect infotainment system with Bluetooth, as well as an 8.4-inch touch screen, navigation, and a 7- or 10-speaker stereo system. The available voice-activated Uconnect infotainment system, which offers smartphone app integration, is one of the best in the business, with legible touch-screen buttons and corresponding buttons and knobs for the stereo and climate systems.

Be Safe. Standard safety equipment on the 2014 Ram 1500 includes four-wheel antilock disc brakes, stability control, hill-start assist, trailer-sway control, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. A fully integrated trailer brake controller is also optional, as well as a rearview camera and front/rear parking sensors. Models with Uconnect Access have an emergency telematics system that connects you with 911 operators at the touch of a button and provides stolen vehicle tracking.
