How the Jim Shorkey Car Brands Got Their Names

As most of you know or could guess, The Jim Shorkey Auto Group is named after the man who started it as just a 3-car showroom – Jim Shorkey. Now decades and dealerships later, Jim Shorkey Auto Group is still a family run business and has become one of the most recognized automotive names in Western Pennsylvania.

But how did the car brands we sell get their names? Just like Jim Shorkey, Ford, Chrysler and Dodge we’re named after their founders. While Mitsubishi, Kia, Jeep and Ram have a different story. Check out below as we break down how these iconic brands got their names!

It’s not often that a company is named after its own logo, but that’s been the case with Mitsubishi since the 1870s. Mitsu is Japanese for three, and Hishi (pronounced Bishi at the end of a word) means rhombus, or diamond. The logo is a combination of two familial crests: that of the founder, and that of his first employer.

According to Kia Motors, the name “Kia” derives from the Sino-Korean words ki (“to come out”) and a (which stands for Asia), it is roughly translated as “arise or come up out of Asia” or “rising out of Asia”

Ford Motor Company’s name pays tribute to the man, the myth, the legend himself – Henry Ford. Henry Ford was an American industrialist, the founder of the Ford Motor Company, and sponsor of the development of the assembly line technique of mass production.

Chrysler falls into the same category as Ford and Dodge in naming their company after themselves. Walter P. Chrysler was an American automotive industry executive and founder of Chrysler Corporation.

Dodge owes its name to the two founding brothers – Horace and John Dodge, who were both automobile manufacturing pioneers.

Everyone always assumes Jeep comes from the slang version of the army term “general purpose,” or GP. That’s not entirely wrong, but it runs deeper than that. The Willis Overland was more frequently called the “Peep,” since it was a reconnaissance vehicle. As such it was coded GP, which meant it was a government vehicle with a wheelbase of 80 inches.

Although Dodge had produced trucks since 1917, the 1981 pickups were the first to sport the Ram name. Dodge actually used a Ram’s head hood ornament back in 1933 to characterize its trucks as rugged vehicles. The symbol was dropped in the 1950s and then resurrected for 1981 when Lee Iacocca (then President and CEO at Chrysler Corp.) and Dodge’s marketing team decided to name Dodge’s trucks after the tough beast and brought back the old mascot.

Recently, they ranked the most fuel-efficient five-year-old cars, and to no surprise, some of our beloved brands are on the list. Ford redesigned the midsize Fusion for 2010, and as part of that change introduced the Fusion Hybrid. With room for the entire family, the Fusion Hybrid offers comfort and great drivability in a very fuel-efficient package.


Ford Escape Hybrid (2WD)

Combined Fuel Economy: 32 mpg
As the most fuel-efficient SUV on the road in 2010 (with the exception of its two siblings in the following slides), the Escape Hybrid offered great utility as well as impressive fuel economy. The newest Escape design is quite a departure from this five-year-old version, and the hybrid is no longer an option.

Combined Fuel Economy: 31 mpg
One of the least expensive fuel-efficient vehicles, the Rio offers reliable transportation in a small but useful package. The interior is not as sparse as you might expect, but it is pretty basic — given the price.

In honor of Presidents Day, we are examining the traits and characteristics exemplified by some of our most admirable presidents. And while taking a look back at the men who shaped our country, we found some similarities with our automotive brands! So we thought it would be entertaining to imagine Jim Shorkey brands as presidents.

Ford: George Washington

Other than both being the first – George Washington being the first president and Ford building the first affordable, mass-produced automobile – Washington and Ford share similar qualities. George Washington’s character can be defined by both great strength and great influence. And for that reason, our Founding Fathers chose him as our first president. Likewise, the Model T was built to accommodate everyone—large enough for the family, but small enough for the individual to run and care for. It was made from the best materials, by the best men to be hired, after the simplest designs that modern engineering devised. And because of the automobile’s great strength, it was named the world’s most influential car of the 20th century in an international poll. Both George Washington and Ford set the standards for presidents and automobiles to come.

Jeep: Theodore Roosevelt

The life of Theodore Roosevelt was one of constant activity and outdoor adventure, immense energy, and enduring accomplishments. Roosevelt’s engaging personality enhanced his popularity and his features became symbols of national recognition. You can find these same admiring qualities in the Jeep brand. Jeep is no stranger to the great outdoors, for their main product range consists of sport utility and off-road vehicles. Today, the Jeep Wrangler is one of the few remaining four-wheel-drive vehicles with solid front and rear axles. These axles are known for their durability, strength, and articulation. Just like Roosevelt, Jeep has a signature look with its seven-slot grille that is recognized anywhere.

Mitsubishi: Woodrow Wilson

Thomas Woodrow Wilson can be described as confident, ambitious, intelligent, loyal, generous, and extremely hardworking. Wilson was a leader of the Progressive Movement, and after a policy of neutrality at the outbreak of World War 1, Wilson led America into war in order to “make the world safe for democracy.” The Mitsubishi brand follows in Wilson’s footsteps when it comes to loyalty and safety. The Mitsubishi Mirage received recognition for the highest loyalty in the Non-Luxury Sub-Compact Market by IHS Automotive. And not to be outdone, the Outlander, Outlander Sport, and Lancer have been honored with the title of “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). These Mitsubishi models are designed to make the roads a safer place.

Kia: John F. Kennedy

John Kennedy was charming, witty, ambitious, competitive, gregarious, and easy on the eyes. He made the rules and often ignored convention – he was “The Boss.” Much like JFK, Kia is “The Boss” of the automotive market. While most automotive manufactures are used to the conventional way of producing vehicles, Kia took a different approach and made design its “core future growth engine.” JFK was described as an imposing figure, with flashy threads and a smile to match. JFK’s style can be found in Kia’s “Tiger Nose”, which Chief Designer Officer, Peter Schreyer, describes as “a powerful visual signal, a seal, an identifier.”

Stay Fuel-Efficient in Pittsburgh With These Green Driving Tips

If you’ve made more than a few road trips this summer and are looking to save a little money on gas going into the fall, then Jim Shorkey in North Huntingdon has you covered. Lighten your load

Extra weight in the car means more energy consumption. Removing items you don’t need from your car can really improve fuel efficiency. It may be convenient to have those items on hand, but it’s costing you money to haul it around.

Take care of your tires

Underinflated tires are not only bad for fuel efficiency but are also dangerous. Tires that are properly inflated will have less friction on the road, which reduces the energy required to run the engine. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), maintaining tire pressure at the automaker’s recommended level can improve gas mileage by up to 6 percent. Check your tires at least once a month and before going on a long trip.

Be easy on the road

Smooth driving is the key to fuel efficiency. Abrupt acceleration and braking not only deplete fuel efficiency by 33 percent, but also result in excessive amounts of pollutants. Where Have You Gone in Your Kia Soul?

The Eat Your Kimchi team is a Korea-based YouTube/blogger team made up of a quirky couple, Simon and Martina Stawski, who explore Korea in their Kia Soul. Kia has teamed up with the couple to help expand their adventures and provided them with a customized Kia Soul, which has been their mode of transportation during their adventures in Korea.

The Kia Buzz team met up with the dynamic duo in the hometown of Kia Motors, Seoul, to find out more about the adventures in the Eatyourkimchi Soul. Check out their interview below:

Kia: So, what’s the story behind Eat Your Kimchi?

EYK: Six years ago, we first came to Korea to teach English. We started blogging about our adventures on the side because we wanted our families to see what Korea was like. There wasn’t really that much overseas coverage of Korea back then, so our families had no idea what we were getting into. Now our blog is popular enough that we could both quit teaching, and we do this full-time. We do segments about K-pop, Korean culture and our adventures. When we’re in Korea, we do Korean things, but we shoot videos in all of the countries we travel to, like China, Japan, France, and the United States.

Kia: How did the Eatyourkimchi Mobile (#EYKSoul) project start?

EYK: Since our adventure videos were such a big hit with our audience, we thought it would be natural for us to venture out to areas outside of Seoul. But traveling in a taxi with cameras, mics, lighting, and tripods isn’t too convenient. We approached Kia with the idea that we should shoot our adventure videos in the Kia Soul. It made perfect sense to us. The Soul is a very fun car, and we’re rather quirky people. Driving the Kia around was the next evolution of our programming, and so far it’s been a perfect fit. Our first major adventure video we did with the Eatyourkimchi Mobile was a great success with our audience!

Kia: What inspired the Eatyourkimchi Mobile design?

EYK: We both have lots of tattoos, and Martina’s hair is half pink. We have a dog that’s half blue! We’re very noticeable, and our personalities are represented in many ways by the way we look. We wanted the Eatyourkimchi Mobile to go with that vibe. If we were going to have a new addition to our EatYourKimchi family, the Eatyourkimchi Mobile had to look the part! So, the colors and the swirls you see on the Eatyourkimchi Mobile can be found in a lot of our videos and branding as well, from our tattoo designs, to our studio sign, to our YouTube thumbnails. The Eatyourkimchi Mobile not only stands out on its own from the rest of the cars on the streets of Korea, but it also represents us perfectly.

Kia: What is the best memory you have with your Eatyourkimchi Mobile so far?

EYK: For Martina’s birthday, we took the Eatyourkimchi Mobile to Everland, a major amusement park in Korea. I packed a lot of lunch meats and liverwurst and breads and cheeses for her birthday. We sat in the back of our Soul and cut our meats and cheeses on a tiny cutting board and had a little picnic in the trunk! I’m sure it looked funny to passersby, but it was a very special moment for us.

Kia: Share any driving tips for first-time drivers in Korea.

EYK: Give yourself a bit more room between your car and cars in front of you. A lot of people will merge in front of you without signaling. Don’t get angry! So the more room you give yourself the better! Also, you MUST get a GPS navigation system. Seoul is exceptionally difficult to navigate because of the many alleyways and smaller streets all over the city.

Kia: Share any upcoming plans for Eat Your Kimchi.

EYK: We’re in the process of opening up our own coffee shop. It’s a project we’ve been working on for almost a year, and finally, we should be opening by the end of July this year. We’re really excited to be able to connect with our audience offline, and this coffee shop is going to be a great chance for us to do that. Also, the full Eat Your Kimchi crew is planning a very epic two week road trip, in which we go on many adventures around many different parts of Korea, and we’ll be testing the limits of the Eatyourkimchi Soul. It’s going to be loads of fun!

What adventures have you been on in your Kia Soul?

SUVs, Crossovers Beat Out Sedans for “Most Popular” Title

Chances are an SUV or crossover vehicle just passed you on the road. Perhaps even while you were driving an SUV or crossover yourself. Why are we willing to go out on a limb with this? Because SUVs and crossover vehicles have overtaken sedans as the most popular vehicle body style in the U.S., according to analysis of new vehicle retail registrations by IHS Automotive. In fact, SUVs and crossovers now account for 36.5% of the new vehicle market versus 35.4% for sedans.

The Jeep Cherokee, among others, is credited with being a “key” driver in the growth of the SUV and crossover segment. According to the study, consumers appreciate such attributes as a higher seating position, higher ground clearance, more interior space, and towing capacity.

Interestingly, even as little as 5 years ago, sedans held the number one spot with 36.3%, while SUVs and crossovers accounted for 31.4%.

“The sedan no longer holds the dominant position it once did,” said IHS Automotive in a statement. “Through the first five months of 2014, the most popular body style in the industry among individual consumers has been SUVs and crossovers.”
